The material known as Silica, or Fused Quartz, is made of high purity SiO(purity better than 99.8% SiO2). Depending on the production technology, the material can be: opal, translucent, or transparent. Its thermotechnical properties are excellent: the red-hot silica crucible can be safely placed in water, the crucible will not be damaged. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the material at temperatures between 0 and 800 ºC: 5,5x10-7/ºC. The crucibles are solid up to 1,730 ºC, while they are malleable above 1,900 ºC. The substance will never be in a liquid state, it changes from its malleable form to a vapor state at higher temperatures.
Its chemical resistance is excellent: of the acids, only HF dissolves it, while phosphoric acid only reacts with the vessel at high temperatures. Therefore, it is possible to evaporate phosphoric acid in silica vessels.
