Another (modern) way to produce steam is a steam generator. The steam generator is located separately from the chamber, but usually under the autoclave housing.

The arrangement shown in the picture enables the efficient removal of air, which plays a fundamental role in the design of the ideal autoclave.

The structure and components of the ideal autoclave:

Other accessories used for the autoclave:

  • Water softener for hard tap water, to supply rapid cooling and the vacuum pump
  • Wire baskets for holding and convenient handling of flasks and tools
  • Buckets closed from the bottom (benchtop trays) for destruction, to contain dirty liquids
  • Elevating lift for large volume vertical appliances
  • Ion exchange cartridge for supplying water to the steam generator
  • Delivery cart and charging cart for large-volume desktop devices
  • Water pre-filter for filtering solid particles in tap water

Why is it important to have a steam generator in the autoclave?

The steam generator has some very important advantages for an autoclave, because:

  • There is no heater in the chamber, so it is very easy to keep the chamber clean (chambers with a flat bottom are not optimal because some of the condensate may remain inside).
  • The steam is introduced in the upper part of the chamber, and the air can be removed in the lower parts of the chamber.
  • The device heats up much faster than with "traditional" heaters.
  • The pre-vacuum cycles run smoothly and quickly because there is no water in the bottom of the chamber (only if the bottom of the chamber is spherical!).

On the next page, we present the devices of German Systec, a leader in the development and production of laboratory autoclaves, which offer an ideal solution for all autoclaving tasks. >>
