The Kjeldahl method is a traditional but versatile nitrogen determination method that can be used for food and feed industry samples (cereal, meat, fish, milk, dairy products, fruit and vegetables), beverages, environmental analytical samples (agricultural, soil, fertilizer, water and wastewater ), for the analysis of chemical and pharmaceutical samples as well as other industrial samples (paper, textile, rubber, plastic and polymer). Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) is a frequently checked parameter in the field of wastewater treatment, but Kjeldahl analysis is also used to determine the crude protein content of food industry samples.

Kjeldahl nitrogen is the sum of the organic nitrogen, ammonia (NH3) and ammonium ion (NH4+) content of the sample. Total nitrogen is the sum of Kjeldahl nitrogen and nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-) ions.

More details

The Kjeldahl analysis consists of 3 steps:

1. Destruction of the organic matter content of a sample by adding concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) at high temperature, which can happen:

2. Extraction of the ammonia content by steam distillation after diluting the acidic ammonium sulfate solution resulting from destruction and neutralizing it with sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

3. Determination of ammonia (nitrogen) content by titration

Velp UDK type 129, 139 and 149 stills are capable of steam distillation (second step), while the new type 159 and 169 analyzers are capable of combined complete analysis (second and third step).

A unique feature of Velp steam distillation unit - titanium condenser

Velp UDK titán kondenzor

The use of VELP Scientifica's patented titanium condenser results in significant cooling water savings (up to 0.5 l/min). This is because; the efficiency of the titanium capacitor is 20x better than that of the capacitor made of glass..
The graph on the left illustrates the advantage of titanium over a glass capacitor. With the help of the titanium condenser used in the Kjeldahl stills of Velp UDK, the temperature of the distillate (35 °C) can be kept below the threshold temperature with less water.

Safety elements of Velp steam distillation units

Velp UDK139The safe operation of the UDK series is guaranteed by the following elements:

1. Low pressure steam generator
2. Sensitive test tube closing arm
3. Sensor security door
4. Cooling water with flow monitor
5. Sensitive test tube holder
6. Drip tray
7. Service door (electric shutdown)
8. Colored reagent tubes
9. Display of reagent quantities (≥UDK139)

In addition to Kjeldahl distillation, Velp's steam stills can also be used to determine the content of nitrite, phenol, volatile acids, cyanides, and alcohol.

Increase the productivity of your Kjeldahl analysis with an autosampler

The UDK 169 Kjeldahl distillation apparatus is a stand-alone nitrogen/protein determiner. However, this type can be supplemented with a 24-slot sample changer, with the help of which the serial (mass) determination of N/protein can be performed without user intervention.
